The Founder (2016) Reviews
The Founder is a biographical drama film starring Michael Keaton based on the life of American businessman and founder of the McDonald’s Corporation Ray Kroc. Whether you love the McDonald’s brand or hate it, this film offers a compelling view into the way it has captivated us all with its worldwide presence.

In 1954, salesman Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton) meets with brothers Dick (Nick Offerman) and Mac (John Carroll Lynch) McDonald, the owners of the hamburger restaurant known as “McDonald’s”. Fascinated by the brothers’ ability to have burgers and fries cooked in a matter of seconds, Kroc suggests the idea of franchising the restaurant nationwide, hoping to use this as a way to take control of the company and earn money for himself.

Featuring yet another terrific performance from the ever-versatile Michael Keaton, his second best behind Birdman, The Founder is an interesting look into the way one man helped turn a small hamburger restaurant into a global fast food empire. It is fascinating seeing how one simple idea – fast food – has changed the culinary world forever. However, one cannot help but feel sorry for the misfortune the McDonald brothers went through as a result of franchising their name and the exploitation they received. I should also mention that the film reminded me of the 2010 film The Social Network, with its similar plot about one man exploiting a clever idea from two brothers for his own financial gain.

I rate it 8/10.

Split (2016) Reviews

A welcome return to form for the director and James McEvoy gives one of his finest performances. I am not sure how many actors could achieve what he has executed so well here and one wonders if the film could have worked at the highest level without him. In between some of his bigger studio choices he has chosen challenging or interesting roles no matter how the films turn out and his range and talent always keep surprising but he takes it to another level here.

I won’t reveal too much about the film as others will do that, except to say it was a great film to watch in the theater, full of suspense and in some ways quite touching and meaningful, even if you do or don’t like the final twists you’ll be drawn in to this story and on the edge of your seat in more of a suspense mode.

I wasn’t sure if the film would go beyond a typical kidnapping film in the first five minutes but I can assure you its completely different to any expectations you’ll have despite the director putting some of his more traditional touches on the film towards the end of it which really work in this case. I’ve always liked his earlier films as they often look at human conditions or flaws with imagination and some of his films have fallen short but he sounds like he’s become more open minded and enjoying his work returning to form so well here and all I can say is well done, he has great attention to detail and gives his all.

This is a great film if you want an original suspense/thriller go and see it. I was sorry to see a review that put this film down, those reviews are off the mark this time round in my opinion I hope there is more to come from the M Night daring to be different again, his lower budget work is outstanding and easily brings out his best storytelling.

James McEvoy you’ve smashed it here and given you’re all it was worth the risk, keep taking them! Having attended the Q&A he comes across a decent humble man which I would think gives his performances such resonance and skill. Also a great performance from Anya Taylor Joy she’s a talent as well. Go see the see the film, especially in the threatre on a big screen it will have you on the edge of your seat.

The Comedian (2016) Reviews
What was the last good movie De Niro was in? You could probably only come up with Heat which was way back in 1995. He’s fat lazy and uninspired and even though this is a passion project, that comes through clearly here too.

De Niro was a national treasure at one point. His roles in Taxi Driver and Raging Bull still sets the standard for elite acting, but success has extinguished whatever muse once drove him.

He should just stick to small roles like in American Hustle where people don’t have to be confronted with his ego and stature. Everything he does, your mind is thinking “OK now De Niro is firing a gun like an idiot without aiming” instead of “OK now (character name) is firing a gun like an idiot”.

Sad to see. I hope this never happens to Will Ferrel.

20th Century Women (2016) Reviews

“20th Century Women” is the story of three women of different generations who help to see a teenage boy learn what it is to become a man.

The three women, (Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig, and Elle Fanning)become the primary influences in the life of Bening’s son (Lucas Jade Zumann). Being is nothing short of fantastic as the mother, Dorothea, a product of the ’40s and ’50’s, who is leading a bohemian-type lifestyle, and who rents rooms to Abbie (a photographer played by Gerwig, and a mechanic ( Billy Crudup). I would look for Gerwig and Crudup to contend for Best Supporting Oscars. Zumann is refreshing as Bening’s son, Jamie.

Mike Mills(“Beginners”) has created a setting in 1979 that is easily identifiable and relatable. There are no plot twists or surprises, just interesting characters that actually talk and listen to each other.

Paterson (2016) Reviews

Paterson is a 2016 drama film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. The film stars Adam Driver and Golshifteh Farahani as a Paterson, New Jersey couple, one of which is a bus driver and a poet.

Director : Jim Jarmusch
Writer : Jim Jarmusch
Stars : Adam Driver, Golshifteh Farahani, Helen-Jean Arthur
Genre : Comedy, Drama
Release : 16 May 2016 France/Cannes Film Festival – 9 February 2017 Russia
“Paterson (Adam Driver) is a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey – they share the name. Every day, Paterson adheres to a simple routine: he drives his daily route, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield and overhearing fragments of conversation swirling around him; he writes poetry into a notebook; he walks his dog; he stops in a bar and drinks exactly one beer. He goes home to his wife, Laura (Golshifteh Farahani). By contrast, Laura’s world is ever changing. New dreams come to her almost daily, each a different and inspired project. Paterson loves Laura and she loves him. He supports her newfound ambitions; she champions his secret gift for poetry. The history and energy of the City of Paterson is a felt presence in the film and its simple structure unfolds over the course of a single week. The quiet triumphs and defeats of daily life are observed, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details.”
Paterson (2016) Reviews
Paterson is a celebration of the small details in life. A poetic and charming love-story about a perfectly ordinary couple, living in a perfectly ordinary town. The town in question is Paterson, New Jersey. Home of poet William Carlos Williams, comedian Lou Costello, and one of America’s largest waterfalls. The man in question, in true Jarmusch style, is also named Paterson (played with pinpoint subtly by Adam Driver). Paterson is a hard-working bus driver who quietly goes about his duties, all the while allowing the scenery and eavesdropped conversation to inspire his main passion in life; writing poetry. Meanwhile, his girlfriend and the love of his life, played without fault by Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani, is a stay-at-home creative. She spends her day baking imaginative cupcakes and making new curtains from scratch. The films narrative centres around a seven day week. Each day brings a new variation on the theme, and each moment a reflection on two people who wholeheartedly accept each other for who they are.Paterson is a quiet and contemplative film that sits perfectly in Jarmusch’s repertoire. It’s a film about how people choose to live their life, regardless of the necessities to work and make money. Like poetry, the words and images flow with little dramatic tension or conflict. Jarmusch explained at Cannes that he intended Paterson to be an antidote to the modern action film, and if this is the case, I’ll definitely be coming back for another dose.
